Unstable transfer mass standards in an interlaboratory comparison

A pilot laboratory for an interlaboratory comparison of mass mistakenly purchased a completely new set of weights as transfer standards. The subsequent instability in the travelling standards during the several years of the comparison exceeded any laboratory-specific variation and quoted uncertainties of each participant.

This is a good example of how unknown measurement errors can lead to (grossly) under-estimated measurement uncertainties.
